Getting to know copyright is like learning the lyrics to a catchy tune — we don’t always get it right. I, for one, will never live down “Hit me with your pet shark”. Of course, our first instinct nowadays is to hop on to Google and search for the right lyrics, usually right after it’s been pointed out to us that we’ve been singing the lyrics wrong all this time.
While there are a heap of websites that may have the song lyrics you are after, there are only a handful of sources that have the necessary rights to make them available online. You see, lyrics are considered as separate works from the song they are used in, and as such, they are protected separately by copyright. So to save yourself from further embarrassment at your next sing-along as well as scoring the added bonus of being copyright compliant, try searching for lyrics on sites which are appropriately licensed to publish lyrics online. Linking to lyrics on such sites as MetroLyrics ensures that you’re going to be rocking out with Pat Benatar with the right lyrics, and doing so legally, everytime.
