…my true love gave to me 11 copyright friendly kitten images and videos. Although, the Copyright Office love cats and we’ve been looking for an excuse to do a blog post about copyright and cats; the idea for this post actually came from a genuine copyright situation involving images of kittens.
A couple of weeks ago, we were invited to give a presentation to Library staff on using social media. One of the issues that we wanted to make staff aware of was not posting links to infringing material on either Facebook or Twitter. When I looked at the Library’s Twitter Feed to find an example of an image that might be infringing, I can across some tweets discussing library cats which included a link to a photo of a kitten sleeping on some books. The image in question had been used on a blog with no attribution and was a perfect example of how not to use images on blogs. It gave me an opportunity to demonstrate to the library staff how quick and easy it was to locate a similar image that would be copyright compliant. Following on from images, we also talked about copyright compliant videos and, honestly, what would Youtube be without cat videos.
If you want to find copyright compliant images to use for teaching and University purposes, we recommend searching either Flickr or Google images. Use the advanced search to limit your results to Creative Commons or images that are licenced for reuse. We’ve developed two guides, Flickr and Creative Commons Images and Google Images and Creative Commons Images, The instructions work just as well for non-kitten related images.
If you’re searching for either kitten or non-kitten videos, we suggest you follow our tips for identifying infringing material to help you find copyright compliant videos.
For those of you hoping to actually see 11 images or video of kittens, I give you a very cute Christmas cat cartoon and one of my all time favourite series of kitten images.

55 days old: Lenardo
This is actually one of a series of images taken by Christian Holmer. Christian has photographed Lenardo and his brothers and sisters almost every day since they were born. The result is some of the most adorable kitten photos you’ll ever see. The images are licensed under Creative Commons so can be freely reused.
Finally, to add some academic merit to this post, I give you Exhibit A – an article which appeared in The Age – This just in: Cute Cats increase productivity
